E&C provides any level of editing, from a light proof to a heavy edit, of documents from 1 to 1000+ pages. However, if a manuscript has so many problems that it would require a complete rewrite, we will generally decline the project, as the cost would likely be prohibitive. Frankly, if you aren't a pretty good writer, you shouldn't waste your time.
Many nontraditional publishers offer editing services. Unfortunately, quite a few of the production jobs that they send to us are incompetently edited and not remotely ready for publication. A moonlighting English teacher may be able to improve weak areas in terms of grammar and syntax, but that is simply not enough. The book publishing industry embraces a century of standards and traditions, particularly in terms of punctuation, abbreviations, special formatting (e.g., lists, sidebars), numbers, dialog, variant spellings, and so on. Your book deserves to be edited by an experienced professional.
